Robbie Hand BA, DipEd, RPP, Life Coach. Robbie is an experienced trainer and natural therapist. She has a special interest in helping clients understand their innate gifts and their ability to free themselves from restrictive beliefs and behaviours. She is a linguist and writer encouraging the use of language and creative expression in self-healing.

The following dive sites are visited on a regular basis by our Paradise divers and we are discovering more all the time.

For your convenience, we have classified our dive sites into levels of experience.

Level 1: Beginner diver. Maximum depth 18 metres, gentle with no current

Level 2: Intermediate diver, depths range from 20-25 metres, some current, some surface waves at times

Anemone Fish

Level 3: Advanced diver, depths up to 30 metres, expect current and exposed surface conditions at times

Paradise Reef. (shore / house reef) Level 1
This is the reef located right in front of Paradise. In one direction, it is a labyrinth of lava flow covered in stunning hard and soft corals, swarming in tropical reef species, shallow and bright – a photographers dream! In the other is a fantastic training site with a variety of terrain to make the most of your learning experience. We utilise this site for our night diving and you can snorkel it any time during your stay. All our local species are represented here and the colours are stunning.

Dolphin Bay. Level 1
Located just a bay over, this drift dive is on the island wall. Resident Eels and lionfish make this a popular dive. Large fish like snapper and trevally make regular appearances adding spectacle to one of our favourite sites.

Coral Gardens. Level 1
Nicknamed Nirvana and only a few minutes by boat from the Resort, this is one of our best dive sites. Three fingers of lava once streamed into the ocean and are now covered with a variety of hard and soft coral species. Rays, sharks and big schools of barracuda are the keepers of the Coral Garden. Schools of trevally, snappers and tunas abound. It’s an overdose of everything!

Nudibranch

Steve’s Corner Level 1
This dive site reveals a huge variety of soft corals feeding in the current. Turn the corner and come up shallow to enjoy a large archway swim-through guarded by the resident anemone fish and filled with Ghost Coral. Sharp-eyed divers will also spot the juvenile blue ribbon eels here.

Tomasi’s Delight. Level 1
This dive site is situated close to Paradise. A steep slope of hard corals hides many small treasures – dwarf lionfish, cowries and nudibranchs have all made their homes here, as well as an array of featherstars and sea cucumbers.

Orgasm (Vuna Reef). Level 2
Vuna Reef at its finest! This wall dive faces open ocean and it is here that we have seen some of our favourite regulars: sharks, rays and napoleon wrasse. Drift by schools of spanish mackerel or giant tuna from the deep. All this in only 60f /18m, a truly awe-inspiring dive site that never seems to disappoint us.

Colours of Paradise

Tavoro Cave (Vuna Reef). Level 3
This deep wall dive has got it all. A spooky cave at 90f/27m, swim – throughs, and lots of life. The topography of this site is striking: a sheer wall with plenty of gullies.
Look up into clouds of reef fish, look down to reef sharks, and look out to barracuda, tuna and turtles. A dive not easily forgotten!

Yellow Fin Wall (Vuna Reef). Level 2
Drift along this section of Vuna Reef and enjoy a fabulous vista of soft corals. Keep a watch in the blue for the namesakes of this site – large yellow fin tuna that speed gracefully past in the company of other pelagic fish and turtles.

Cabbage Patch (Vuna Reef). Level 1

Sheltered within Vuna Lagoon, dive down to an almost lunar landscape. A shallow dive perfect for novices, cruise around the huge cabbage-like corals that sit on brilliant white sand and marvel at the marine life that finds a home amongst them.

Soft coral capital of the world

Incredible Reef (Vuna Reef) Level 3

On the inner side of Vuna Reef, this deep dive explores a large wedge-shaped area cutting into the Reef wall. Schools of pelagics glide past as smaller reef fish swarm in the shelter of the wedge. This site certainly lives up to its name!

Pinnacles (Vuna Reef). Level 3
This deep seamount stands a little off Vuna Reef and attracts Manta Rays in season and other large visitors as well as smaller schooling species. Soft corals are abundant and bright thanks to the sea current passing by.

Soft corals

The Stairs (Vuna Reef). Level 2
On the top of the reef, you are greeted by hard plate corals of all colours, and clouds of fish, including titan trigger fish, parrot fish and wrasse. From here, dive down through a swim through covered in soft corals and out onto an inverted wall swathed in pure white soft coral. Back up the stairway, under the arches enveloped in white and purple soft corals. All types of reef sharks and barracuda often visit this site. A favourite amongst our Dive Team!

Fish Factory (Vuna Reef). Level 2
Stunning hard plate corals, lots of ambient light, multicoloured patches of soft coral, giant clams and swarms of reef fish at a depth of less than 60f/18m make this a popular site for photographers, beginners and experienced divers.

Purple Wall (Rainbow Reef site). Level 3
This is one of the truly stunning sites on the Rainbow Reef. It deserves its billing as one of the worlds top dive sites. A solid wall of purple soft coral and more species than can be counted. You will not want to leave!

The Great White Wall (Rainbow Reef site). Level 3

White Wall

The soft coral capital of the world’s signature dive offers an astounding wall of pure white soft coral. This site is definitely the world famous Rainbow Reef’s top draw. A coral encrusted swim – through leads onto the wall from the reef top. A dazzling myriad of colour and life inhabits the reef top. Manta rays glide past with ethereal grace. On exiting the water from this site an awed silence lasts for a while before an excited chatter that lasts for days starts among divers. Not to be missed!

Jack’s Place (Rainbow Reef site). Level 2
Situated on the Rainbow Reef, this dive site offers an immense coral bommie covered with vibrant colours of soft coral and fish. The site is a haven for spanish dancers, box fish and white tipped reef sharks.

Rainbow Passage (Rainbow Reef site). Level 2
In terms of fish life and soft corals, the sheer abundance on this Rainbow Reef site is incredible. The top of the reef starts at 40ft/12m and gradually slopes to 70ft/21m. Covered by some very unique soft corals not found in similar form or in this abundance anywhere else in Fiji. Well, the name speaks for itself!

Amazing Underwater Life

Annies Bombie (Rainbow Reef). Level 2
A submerged reef with many big coral bommies including the large ‘Annies Bombie’. Weave through the coral and enjoy the schools of fusillias, bandits and anthias – and the occasional leopard shark

The Zoo (Rainbow Reef). Level 3
An extreme marine experience! Schools of barracuda are common here, swimming above the white tip reef sharks resting on the sand. Moral eels, groupers and small reef fish are plentiful and lucky divers will glimpse the graceful bronze whaler sharks patrolling the deep blue waters.

Nuku Reef (Rainbow Reef). Level 2
Drift dive along this gently sloping reef and marvel at the small critters that reside here – Christmas tree worms, clams and sea anemones are all in abundance, along with their resident clown fish and trigger fish.

Fish Factory (Rainbow Reef). Level 2
Dive along this steep wall and meet many fish feeding in the current – parrot fish, spanish mackerel and angle fish are all resident here. The sharp-eyed can also spot stone fish and leaf scorpion fish hiding in the wall crevices.

Rainbows End (Rainbow Reef). Level 3
Soft coral heaven! Beautiful purple, yellow and red soft corals make sure Rainbow’s End lives up to it’s name. Add in lionfish, Moorish Idols and hundreds of anthias and this is a true explosion of colour.

Island life as it should be writes Mike Bingham

One hour’s flight from Nadi and I am a world away from jumbo loads of tourists, salesman and traffic noise. I have discovered the real Fiji, where villagers still feel at home fishing, planting their gardens, thatching bures and hunting wild boar. And providing a genuine welcome to the tourists drawn by the magic which is Taveuni.

The island is about 40km long and no more than 10km wide. There are 28 extinct volcanoes, patches of rainforest, coconuts, mangoes and bananas grow wild, as do exotic flowers. And coral reefs known to scuba divers around the world.

Not that snorkeling is necessary when the lamplight fish appear as dinner is completed by the shore.

There are scads of lamplighters, which are about 10cm long with a fluorescent patch under each eye. On a moonless night they produce laser–like aquatic magic as they gather by lava tubes beneath the resort, Paradise Taveuni.

The resort of 10 self-contained bures is the creation of Australian couple Allan and Terri Gortan.

They have lived in Fiji for seven years, adopted two local children and formed a working relationship with Vuna, the nearby village.

Check-in after the bumpy transfer from the airstrip, is a world away from the foyers of big scale tourism. Guests are greeted with a foot massage on their bure’s veranda.

The villagers carved the traditional furniture and artifacts and provided and installed the thatching of the bures.They also staff the resort .When traditional Fiji evenings are staged for guests, all the villagers come along.

The bures are big comfortable and free of radio, TV and air conditioning. Along with conventional bathroom, there’s a splendid outdoor shower and spa.

There is a horse-riding, forest tour, a village visit, sports fishing, spa sessions and jet-ski rides. Seventeen prime dive sites are within easy reach and manta rays patrol within 10m of the shore. Taveuni has a dive shop and night dives are popular.

Marabu, one of the villagers, offers guided tours on his boar-hunting expeditions. The boars weigh more than 100kg and Marabu wears a long scar on the back of one leg from a past encounter. He was amused by a New York cop who checked into the resort and wanted to go hunting. “What kinds of guns do we use?” he asked.Marabu smiled.”No guns. Just my wooden spear.”             The cop wisely gave up the idea.

It’s early to bed at Taveuni and an early rise for breakfast of fresh picked coconut, pineapple, pawpaw, pasionfruit and two different varieties of bananas. There’s good coffee, but the blended natural fruit drinks are the way to go.

The island’s claim to fame is it is one of the few inhabited places on the meridian. There’s even a church near the resort where the meridian cuts through the pulpit.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to breath under water? If you want to find out but aren’t quite ready to take the plunge into a certification course, Discover Scuba Diving will let you try scuba to see if you like it. While not an actual scuba certification, during the Discover Scuba Diving experience you’ll learn how to use scuba equipment in our horizon edge swimming pool followed by a shore dive.

This gives you a quick and easy introduction to what it takes to explore the underwater world. You will learn the basics you need to dive under the direct supervision of a PADI Instructor. Learn what wearing scuba equipment feels like and how easy it is to move around underwater while wearing it. Find out what it’s like to breathe underwater and learn whether you can be comfortable there. Learn some basic skills and safety rules that will carry over to your PADI Open Water Course when you take the next step. You’ll use mask, snorkel, fins, a buoyancy compensating jacket that also carries your scuba tank and scuba regulator to breathe from and instrumentation to monitor depth and air supply.You will also wear a scuba wetsuit and weights – all supplied by our fully equipped dive shop – Pro Dive Taveuni. You must be at least 10 years old to experience this exciting activity.

Refresher Course FJ$165: 3 hours duration, refreshing basic skills with 1 ocean dive.

This short course is for certified divers that have had a break from diving for a while and need to revisit their diving skills. You will revise the basics under the direct supervision of a PADI Instructor. All the equipment you will need is included – all supplied by our fully equipped dive shop – Pro Dive Taveuni. You must be a certified diver to begin this course.

PADI Open Water Course FJ$660

Get your PADI scuba certification. If you’ve always wanted to learn how to scuba dive, discover new adventures or simply see our wondrous world beneath the water, this is where it starts. The PADI Open Water Diver course consists of three main phases: Knowledge Development to understand basic principles of scuba diving, confined water dives to learn basic scuba skills, Open Water Dives to review your skills and explore! To enroll in the PADI Open Diver course, you must be 10 years or over.  In the PADI Open Water Diver course, you learn to use basic scuba gear for diving  warm water, tropical water diving. PADI’s Open Water Diver materials cover what you need to know about basic scuba diving skills, terminology and safety procedures. For each concept you’ll read a description and watch a video demonstration. Then you’ll jump in the pool to practice these skills with your instructor. Later, as a certified diver, use the course materials as a reference guide for future diving adventures and to review what you learned. You don’t have to wait to get going. The course is 3-4 days in duration, includes theory, exam, dive skills, 4 ocean dives, 200 mtr swim and treading water.

PADI Scuba Diver Course FJ$480

Short on time? The PADI Scuba Diver certification might just be for you. This course requires less time than the PADI Open Water Course, covering only the first three of five sections of knowledge development,  pool sessions and open water training dives, resulting in a limited certification. Particularly if you have limited time to devote to scuba certification, consider becoming a PADI Scuba Diver. Dive under the direct supervision of a PADI Master or PADI Instructor to a maximum depth of 12 metres / 40 feet. You can then later continue your dive training and complete PADI Open Water Dive certification and other courses. Upgrade to PADI Open Water Diver whenever you want! You will learn all the basics of scuba diving through knowledge development, a set of scuba skills in the pool that you’ll use again during open water dives, and an appreciation for the underwater world that will keep you coming back for more bottom time every chance you get! During the course you’ll cover material and practice skills related to topics such as buoyancy skills, breathing underwater, staying warm under water, streamlining your swimming skills, dive buddy techniques, diving environments and aquatic life you’re likely to encounter, preventing common problems underwater, an introduction to to boat diving. All the basic scuba gear is included with your course. The course is 2 days duration, includes theory, dive skills, 2 ocean dives and treading water and you must be 15 years old to begin this course.

Adventure Diver Course FJ$240

This course helps you get more out of diving by introducing you to new types of scuba diving adventures. It’s a great opportunity to work with your instructor to build your scuba diving skills and gain more confidence. Here’s your chance because you can sample three dives of your choice, get a taste of what you like, and feel more at ease in the water, strengthening your underwater skills and letting you enjoy scuba diving more than ever. Get credit! Each Adventure Dive may be credited toward the first dive of the corresponding PADI Specialty course. You can choose what you’re most interested in learning. Choose any three of the following Adventure Dives: AWARE – Fish ID, Boat Diver, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Underwater Naturalist, Underwater Navigator, Deep Diver, Drift Diver, Multi Level Diver, Night Diver, Search and Recovery Diver. PADI’s Adventures in Diving Manual and video on DVD provide information on all specialty diving interests. You’ll use them as a guidebook to improve your diving skills and prepare for new experiences and adventures. To take the Adventure Diver course, you must be an Open Water Diver and the minimum age is 15 years old. After your PADI Adventure Diver certification you can take the next step by completing two more adventure dives. If you’ve completed five total adventure dives that include deep and navigation, you’re a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver. PADI Adventure Dives can also count towards PADI Specialty Diver certifications. After reading about it’s legendary reputation we deviated from our trip to Australia and took all available days at this most beautiful place with it’s heart warmling people and extraordinarily friendly staff. Paradise is lovely. The Fijian staff are so friendly and accommodating. We have enjoyed the outdoor shower immensely and all of the special touches – fresh blossoms in the bure each day, glasses of water ready after diving . Yes, we noticed and appreciate those things – I could list more…umbrella handy, lantern in the evenings, serenaders. The dive staff were great as well. We think Wilson is one of the best dive masters/guides we’ve dived with (over 360 divers for me and 400 for Peter) – so I think that’s saying a lot. What an unbelievable ‘piece of paradise.’ we stumbled upon your resort and now couldn’t imagine holiday anywhere else. The resort is breath taking, the grounds, bures and the views will stay with us forever. The dive team is the best we ever had. They made every dive memorable and we learned so much ‘under the water‘. They take such pride and care of the coral – it is hopeful to last a life time. Getaway with your love to Paradise

To all of you at Paradise Taveuni, this has been an ultimate experience of our around tour trip so far. After spending almost an hour on a bumpy road (with experienced driver!) we arrived the paradise of the earth. We had a warm welcoming by Maikeli, Allan and Kini and then we were escorted to our Bures; Papaya and Niu . We got a fantastic foot massage (nothing is better than that after a looong flight from Canon, Mexico via Los Angeles, and the rest of the day we relaxed by the pool and did some snorkeling outside the resort. The day ended with Fiji Night, with excellent food and a Kava Ceremony which we get invited to. Nice Fijian Music as well with excellent musicians! Cuisine – variated both in sorts and volume, and always with the little extra from Paradise Taveuni! The service has been excellent, we always got what we wanted, when and where we wanted it! No other place in the world have we been met with this kind of personalized service, we felt like family. Diving & Snorkeling: we went fishing & diving in Steve’s Corner, Fish Factory, the stairs, Fish …, and orgasm. Really fantastic!! Thanks to Archie, Toutou and Sam for taking me snorkeling on the sites, I really had a great time with you guys on the reefs! I’ll miss you. Thanks to Toutou & Charlie for the diving. The last dive was the ultimate, stopped counting sharks after reaching 10, a huge sea turtle spotted as well as about 50 barracudas swimming around. We were the only ones at Vuna Reef! Thanks to Kini for excellent service, always with a smile, teaching us Fijian words and sulu tying. We will always remember you. Thanks to the Sunset Boys for breathtaking sunset music, just outside our bures. You are always singing and playing with a smile on your faces and the goodnight song was really nice! Take one of the Resort’s complimentary kayak’s and head north to Dolphin Bay or south to Vuna Reef and discover the beauty of the Taveuni coastline. The waters of Paradise are particularly calm in the morning and perfect for an early morning paddle.

Feed the beautiful tropical reef fish that inhabit the surrounding waters. This is a fun and complimentary activity.

There is a large variety of species to be found at varying times of the year. Depending on the season, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Yellow Fin Tuna, Skip Jack Tuna, Giant Trevally and Barracuda are caught in remarkable quantities.

BOAT TOUR – Koro Levu Beach Trip

Escape the resort for a fun-filled trip to the white sandy islet of Koro Levu. A 20 minute scenic coastal fast boat trip north sees you arrive at the turquoise waters of Koro Levu. Experience snorkelling, swimming, sunbathing and beachcombing on the small island. Beverages and refreshments are available to charge to your room and we can arrange a picnic lunch for your enjoyment if you are away from the Resort over lunch. Towels and snorkelling gear provided.

Coconut Lesson

Learn some interesting facts about coconuts, how to open them the Fijian way and an easy dish you can prepare at home. This fun activity takes 30 minutes and is FJ$30 per person or complimentary for our House Guests.

2 & 4 hour cultural walks are informative & free

Guided Cultural Walk

Set off with our local guide for an educational & leisurely walking tour of the local area. The 2 hr walk visits a village ruins, a deserted cemetery, the nearby black sand beach & the southern reservoir. Learn about the people of this beautiful island along the way. The 2 hour walk is FJ$25 per person or complimentary for our Guests.

The 4 hour walk towards the south includes a tour of past the Indian school, Vuna, the local village with Masi or Tapa – local bark cloth production and mat weaving. Wander through the endless coconut plantations along the way. Your guide will point out features of interest including vegetation and its traditional uses. The 4 hour walk is FJ$45 per person or complimentary for our Guests.

Bury The Lovo

Learn how the staff prepare, bury and cook the Fijian delicacies on the Lovo (earth oven) fire. Enjoy the Lovo Feast that evening. 20 minute complimentary activity on Fiji night.

Garden Tour

Our Garden staff will take you on a short walking tour of the Resort gardens giving you local knowledge of the flora and fauna within the Resort. Learn about the local plants and trees with Fijian names given in most cases. This educational 30 minute tour is FJ$15 or complimentary for our Guests.

Fiji Library

Located at the Tour Desk you will find a selection of Fiji interest books for your use during your stay. Ranging from Fijian history to fish identification you are welcome to make use of these books at any time. See our helpful Tour Desk attendant. This is a complimentary service to our Guests.

Relax around the horizon edge pool

Book Exchange

Located by the Tour Desk, you are welcome to take a book and replace it with one of yours. You will find magazines, travel handbooks, children’s books and a selection of novels. Help yourself.

Board Games

You will find a selection of games to pass your time including Backgammon, Chess, Checkers, Dominos and playing cards.

Jogging / Power Walking

Keeping fit in Paradise is easy to do with our large range of activities, however if jogging and running is what you desire, take off along the main road along the back of the Resort. The public roads are safe to run on (and a little dusty) during the day and you can head north to Nobognio Farm to get more of a hilly workout or south to Vuna Village keeping a flat pace most of the way. Keep an eye on your footing, wear good running shoes, take some water with you and it’s best to set off either before breakfast or after 4.00pm. Let our Security Team know where you are going to ensure your safety.

HIKING ADVENTURE – Mountain Trek Guided Hike

Enjoy an exhilarating 4 hour hike to the top of the Southern Taveuni Mountain offering spectacular 360 degree views of the reefs and rainforest.

Hike through the local farms and rainforest discovering the local flora and fauna along the way. Your guide will point out interesting features and enthral you with some history and tales from days gone by.

This 4 hour hike departs daily at 8.30am or 2.00pm according to weather conditions and is $50 per person.

GUIDED TOUR – Cannibal Cave Tour

Cannibal Cave Tour

A short walk from the resort & you arrive at a hidden underground cave. This mysterious cannibal prison is made from lava rock and you descend part of the way on hands & knees.

Wonder at the ancient legends of the cave & look for old bones from days gone by.

Discover mud pools within the cave that were once used for their healing properties. This is an eerie journey into the lost culture of these remarkable islands.

GUIDED TOUR – Southern Taveuni Tour & Village Visit

Visit the nearby Village

This is the ideal tour to allow you to discover where and how the local Taveuni people live as well as visiting the Southern Blowhole.

Set off in a 4WDrive vehicle with a driver and guide for the village of Salialevu. One of the southern most villages on the Garden Island of Taveuni. Here you will meet the local people and experience the village  infrastructure first hand.

Next stop is the white sandy beach of Salialevu and if you up to a short hike to the waterfall you can enjoy a refreshing dip in the cool waters before heading off to the Village of Vuna. Here they prepare and produce Tapa (bark cloth) and woven mats. The women work hard to prepare the pandanus leaves by boiling them, stripping them with shells to remove thorny edges, then drying the leaves in racks for days until they are dry enough to weave into beautifully handcrafted mats. Bark from the Paper Mulberry tree is used to make Tapa. The tree is uncommon throughout Fiji except for select regions. Learn how the locals produce this unique paper and buy an authentic Tapa from the ladies to help the local community.

Visit the famous Southern Blowhole, the only one on Taveuni. Created by the forces of nature combining volcanic molten lava and the cooling attributes of the ocean. Water on the incoming tide can shoot up to 50 metres into the sky.

HIKING ADVENTURE – Bouma National Heritage Park

Waterfalls on Taveuni

Enjoy a scenic coastal drive to the Bouma National Heritage Park to discover the beauty of the Tavoro Waterfalls. A 10 minute walk to the first and most famous waterfall of Fiji, and decide whether to go onward to the picturesque second and third falls.

Return to Paradise, stopping along the way at the local markets, Handicraft shop, Waitavala Waterslide – natural rock slide, 180 Meridian Line – where today and tomorrow meet and Wairiki Catholic Mission.

The Waitavala Waterslide is a natural waterslide made from the erosion of water over rocks making the stones smooth to slide down. Watch your guide or one of the locals before attempting to slide as the conditions vary with the water flow and can be dangerous.

The 180 Meridian Line passes through Taveuni and you will visit the sign erected to mark the spot where today and tomorrow meet. Take a photo of you time travelling on Taveuni!

Holy Cross Mission

The Holy Cross church and Wairiki Catholic Mission was built in 1907 and overlooks the playing field and Somosomo Strait. An important canoe battle between the invading Tongans and the fierce Taveuni warriors took place in this area and the mission was built to thank the French Missionary who helped the local warriors with their fight strategy. The stained glass is thought to have been imported from France and in the presbytery there is a painting of the famous battle.

This 8 hour day trip is $210 for 1 – 2 adults. Excludes park entry fees of FJ$12.00 per person. Bring a local Guide with you for the day for only $50.

3 hour coastal & rain forest hike is a must do while on Taveuni

Enjoy a scenic coastal drive to the National Parks on the eastern side of  Taveuni, then hike a 3 hour return, marked tropical coastal and rainforest track. You will be rewarded with a magical swim-up waterfall to freshen up in before you begin your return hike.

The return drive back to Paradise includes the local markets, Handicraft shop, Waitavala Waterslide, 180 Meridian Line and Wairiki Catholic Mission.

FJ$265 for 1 – 2 adults. Excludes park entry fees of FJ$30.00 per person. Bring a local Guide with you for the day for only $50.

CULTURAL ENTERTAINMENT – Fijian Night

Fiji Night is a cultural event not to be missed

Fijian Night is a theme night dedicated to the culture and people of this mystical tropical paradise! Sit back and relax as you are invited to spend an evening with friends.

Begin your evening with a traditional Fijian Lovo Feast. Your Lovo dining experience  includes meats, fish and local vegetables prepared ‘real Fiji’ style followed by a tropical dessert. After dinner, you are entertained by the Paradise Cultural Group as they perform a Meke (traditional Fijian dancing) for your enjoyment. You are invited to take photos and join in the dancing celebrations. Then join the villagers and staff for a Yaqona (Kava) Ceremony complete with storytelling, dancing and serenading.

This weekly event is a true Fijian experience not to be missed

CULTURAL ADVENTURE – Kava Nights

Enjoy Kava with our staff

During your stay you may experience a Kava Night. This is a staff activity where the Resort buys Kava for the Staff that have worked particularly well the previous week – a staff incentive you might say.

Of course you are welcome to join them, however we ask that you bring a Sevusevu (gift when entering a village) of a bag of Kava to the Kava bowl when you join them. You can purchase this with your own Bilo (coconut cup) from the Tour Desk. When you bring a Sevusevu, this ensures there will be enough Kava for our staff to share with everyone. Extra bags of Kava can be purchased on the night from our Managers, should you want to keep the Kava celebrations going into the night.

CULTURAL ADVENTURE – Shopping Trip

Fresh produce markets on Taveuni

A 30 minute scenic drive takes you to the shopping area of Taveuni, called Naqara (pr: Nung-gar-ra). See the vegetable markets selling fresh produce from local farms, visit handicraft shops and the other locally run shops in the area selling anything from groceries to Flip Flops. Your driver will point out interesting points along the way.

Shopping Trip is $50 for 1 – 4 persons

You can also take the local open-air bus departing the Paradise Security Base at 6.30am and 12.00 noon for an interesting, scenic and slow paced ride to town. Take a local guide with you for $50 and they will inform you of many interesting facts along the way.

One way bus trip to Naqara is $3-$4 per person.

CULTURAL ADVENTURE – Church Service

The Fijian people are normally quite religious and there are many denominations on the small island. Methodist, Catholic, Seventh Day Adventist, Church of the Laterday Saints as well as Hindu and Moslem Temples.

The Holy Cross church and Wairiki Catholic Mission was built in 1907 and overlooks the playing field and Somosomo Strait. An important canoe battle took place of this beach in the mid17th Century. The mission was built to thank the French Missionary who helped the local warriors with their fight strategy.

The Mass each Sunday is in Fijian and the fantastic choir singing is certainly something to experience. The stained glass is thought to have been imported from France and in the presbytery there is a painting of the famous battle.

Sunday Mass transfers depart Paradise at 8.00am or 10.00am are $50 1-4 persons

EXERCISE – Golf

The Soqulu Golf & Country Club offers a unique 9 hole golf course on the oceanfront featuring beautiful coastline views so bring your camera along. A par 27 course, the best time to tee off is either early morning or later in the afternoon to allow you to miss the heat of the day. The Club House has a Bar and prepares some of the best pizza’s on the island in the outdoor wood-fire pizza oven. You will find it is a popular watering-hole for locals and expatriates alike.

Our Managers will arrange transport to the Golf Club and advise you on the rate for green fees and club hire.
